English edition

Oriental longheaded locust   Acrida cinerea

Where? Anywhere in Japan (wide range in northern hemisphere)

When? 2019/9

It’s so common locust in Japan and you can find it easily in Tsukuba University Campus. It’s about time for their nymphs-They look like fine bamboo work and so cute!- to hatch. Female is one of the largest grasshoppers of Japan and not suited for flying. Male is much smaller and can fly very well, with specific sound, like “kiti-kiti”. So, boys called male “Kitikiti-batta” and called female”Syoryou-batta” in my childhood.
